Character Background ♦
Okay, so everyone knows fighting games aren’t really that good at giving long and complicated stories but I will give it my best here.
Starting off, Cerebella is an orphan. From an early age it would seem, from her motivations and loyalty the Medici Mafia, who own Cirque des Cartes that took Cerebella in. On the surface the Medici’s appear to be noble and generous, as their circus cares for orphans as well as provide entertainment for the masses. But essentially they are the villains of the story, working in everything between kidnapping and slave trafficking to murder and population control. And the generosity of the circus? A front to breed loyal goons for the mafia. Several characters have their grudges against the Medici’s, especially Marie and Ms. Fortune, who will come into play later.
Cerebella is sadly one of the many who believe in the nobility of the Medici’s. They gave her a home and made her a star. With her living hat, Vice-Versa, Cerebella quickly rose to stardom on the center ring. The stage is her passion and the attention turned her into a show off, which cultivated tensions with the other performers. Even her roommate Feng gets a little more than annoyed with it sometimes. But that didn’t matter, as she loves performing for a cheering crowd that loved and adored her. It’s a shame the one person that she craves the same adoration for always kept her at arm’s length. Vitale Medici, the new head of the family and the person Cerebella views as a father (which makes things very icky later) was likely the most detestable of them all. Knowing her devotion to him, Vitale uses Cerebella as his personal legbreaker, making her little more than a tool to him.
But the girl never sees the truth. Many times she’s been described as a good person, someone who doesn’t fit with the Medici’s MO, but very naïve. The more Vitale kept her at an arm’s length, the more she tried to please him. She put on bigger and more elaborate shows, and she followed orders without question.
Which brings us to the story of Skullgirls. After her latest performance (a stunt involving the high-wire and two elephants), Cerebella was approached by Vitale with a job. As it turns out Nadia Fortune (also known as Ms. Fortune) had stolen a jewel known as the “Life Gem” from the Medici Family, and Cerebella was to retrieve the gem at any cost.
Dropped into the usual fighting game fare of beating up random people until the next story point, Cerebella quickly found Ms. Fortune in Little Innsmouth. Cerebella tried her best to intimidate the thief, demanding the Life Gem before things got ugly. But unfortunately Cerebella’s not very good at intimidation and Ms. Fortune is a snarky cat-girl. They had their out because no one talks bad about the circus and/or the Medici’s in front of Cerebella.
The cat lost, but explained how she literally cannot return the gem to Cerebella, as Ms. Fortune swallowed it right before her and her gang was caught by Black Dahlia, Vitale’s assassin. She survived because of the gem, and now she was after the Skull Heart so she can take revenge on Vitale. Ms. Fortune made her escape, and Cerebella followed in pursuit. If she couldn’t get the gem back, she could at least capture and bring Ms. Fortune to Vitale.
Tracking the cat to a cathedral, Cerebella was greeted by a nurse (Valentine) and a shapeshifter (Double), who were more interested in Ms. Fortune and so couldn’t let Cerebella interfere. The player Cerebella wins the fights, proudly proclaiming that nothing gets in the way of her job. Before she could pursue Ms. Fortune to the catacombs, Double tempted Cerebella with taking the Skull Heart for herself. After all, the Skull Heart could grant any desire, even the love of another.
Taking the long steps down to the deepest parts of the church, Cerebella came face to face with the current Skullgirl, Bloody Marie, a former slave who had been attacking the Medici’s. “Strange – you are pure, somehow untainted by the company that keeps you.” Marie, seeing that no matter how inherently good Cerebella was, she was still a part of the mafia, and it mustn’t be allowed to claim the Skull Heart.
Abilities/Special Powers ♦
Cerebella is the master of the living weapon hat Vice-Versa. The sentience of the hat is never explored, as it never speaks nor shows much emotion outside of some facial reactions. What is shown is that Cerebella has full control of the hat’s actions, and it is stated that she is the only person capable of doing so. First off the hat is able shapeshift when its user wields it. Before a fight, the hat clearly sprouts its arms when Cerebella puts it on. Also it can change its color and the shape of the mask, as shown in the non-canon colorswaps and the canon pallet switch when Cerebella changed her costume. Vice-Versa is powerhouse, making Cerebella physically the strongest in the game. But at the same time, it is slow and its attacks are projected. With Cerebella being a fan of professional wrestling, it reflects in Vice-Versa’s attacks.
Cerebella herself is very nimble and acrobatic, being a circus-girl and all. While Vice-Versa does the heavy hitting out of the two, Cerebella does contribute in some attacks. Her attacks are very show-offy, including flips and tumbles, with her sticking the landing. She’s a performer first and foremost, even fights being a stage.
Third-Person Sample ♦
Just because Cerebella was stuck in an entirely new place didn’t mean she couldn’t fall back into old routines.
To anyone who wished to use the ballroom today, sorry to say you will be sorely disappointed. Cerebella’s been hard at work and the star mustn’t be disturbed. If barring the doors shut with some very heavy looking furniture was what it takes, so be it.
Two stories up, Cerebella stood tall over the tightrope she just installed herself for the occasion. “Ladies and gentlemen, gather round and behold Cerebella’s latest feat!” The lonely voice echoed through the empty ballroom. Merely this was practice for her big show. Even now she could hear the cheering crowd of a sold-out house, crying out her name in adoration.
“Tonight you will gaze in amazement as this beauty takes to the tightrope as Vice-Versa juggles not three, but four of these priceless antiques without breaking a single one!” Well priceless antiques might be an over-exaggeration for the four heaviest things she could find in the attic, but she wasn’t kidding about the trick. Every step she took was a graceful glide, Vice-Versa keeping in time with the performer. A show-off, yes, but a talented one no doubt.
It was far from the center ring, but it would have to do.
First-Person Sample ♦
[Panties.]
[That’s right, Cerebella’s big introduction to the network is a glorious pantyshot. Expect that a lot around here.]
Ouch.
[Pushing herself up, the camera finally got a better view of the beautiful and talented Cerebella.]
[Covered in fresh pumpkin goo. There is a story to that but for now Cere’s back on her feet trying to brush off the liquid mess.]
Wow this is embarrassing. How do I miss a big skeleton monster by this much? Ew it’s going to stain.
[With most of the seeds and globs thrown to the ground, Cerebella picks up her hat and dusts off all the goo from it.]
Now let’s see, how I lost the Skullgirl probably has something to do with that big explosion. I really shouldn’t let her get away, she’s a threat to the Medici’s. But on the otherhand, I still have my job to do for Vitale. Nadia Fortune has to be somewhere nearby. So who do I go after first?
